The second session of Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program got underway on Wednesday, November 9. The day appropriately started with a school bus ride, making a couple pickups and delivering us to MVL. Groups were formed for an icebreaker (What does a crow say, anyway?), then a tour of MVL High School, tasty treats, and some info about the school from Pastor Fischer. Back on the bus; next stop Riverbend Alternative Learning Center. There we split into two groups so we could tour the facility. After our tours we were greeted by Synova Nelson, the principal, for a Q&A session.The ALC is about choice and an opportunity to learn in a different environment that is a better fit for some students. Students come from quite a few school districts in the area. A number of Network participants noted that this was a learning highlight for them for the day. From the ALC, the bus took us to New Ulm High School. We were greeted by Student Body President and Vice President, after a short introduction we set out to tour the building and several classrooms. We received demonstrations or explanations RE: Horticulture, Shop, Construction, and Photography (A dark room is really dark.). The visit concluded with a wrap-up meeting in the Media Center with Principal Mark Bergmann. He went over the courses and different options, including several ways to get college credit. Some of the NUHS students even saw parts of the school they didn’t know existed. Back on the bus-and after a short ride we arrive at Cathedral High School for our final stop of the morning. After introductory remarks from Mr. Olson, we broke into groups. We toured the building, including “the tunnel” and then had a classroom experience before a wrap-up with Principal Jason Olson. On to Martin Luther College, where lunch was provided cafeteria style ( so many choices and what should we eat) Duane Winter gave a recap of the colleges history in New Ulm and its educational benefits to its students.

There was a lot of learning and networking, different groupings of students at each school, and a chance to see each other’s schools. Special thanks to Rev. Wayne Fischer (MVL), Synova Nelson (ALC), Mark Bergmann (NUHS), and Jason Olson (CHS) for their help in planning and hosting the visits. The time was very full; a lot was covered in a short time. Never knowing what the weather will be like always makes the History and Culture portion of our day interesting.. From Martin Luther College, we next went to the Pioneer section of the cemetery. Even though it was very windy and COLD we huddled together and learned what the different symbols on stones meant. We also saw where important figures in the history of New Ulm are buried. A thank you to Jim Boeck for braving the weather to share his knowledge.Our next stop was Herman where Denny Warta shared his knowledge of Herman with our group. He has many interesting facts and stories which I’m sure not many people know. Did you know that if it weren’t for Herman we would not be speaking English or German?Our last stop of the day was to the Beyer Haus, which is Bed and Breakfast. A highlight of the day for many was the Silverston Suite, the group had a hard time deciding which room they would like to stay in.

Personality Profiles / Team Building Recap: Session I

As another school year begins so does the 2007 - 2008 Sessions of Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program. The first session was on Wednesday, September 19. This is the second year of our juniors-only program, and it looks like it will be a great group of kids, assuring an eventful year!Traci Green of Brown County Probation and Lynn Gudgeon of Koeckeritz Realty served as Day Chairs. They began the morning with an overview of the program.

The morning session consisted of Personality Profiles and adjective name-game icebreaker. We will never forget Mountain top Mitch. The personality profiles gave us more insight into the makeup of the group. There were a lot of Oranges and Blues, who always have a good time by nature, but the Greens felt lonely as there were only two; so they choose to dazzled us with their vocabulary skills. Luckily, the Golds kept us on task!! Katie Rasmussen of the University of MN Extension Service Brown County facilitated the profiles session.

Other Alumni in attendance that morning were Steering Committee Members Lisa Roeder of Skillings Technology, Duane Winter of Taco Johns, Shawn Jakes of ComCast, Julaine Balbach of Farasyn Construction, Kathy Van Roekel of New Ulm Telecom, and Shannon Hillesheim of United Prairie was our New Ulm Chamber Representative.

Rick Rassier of "Jump"was our team building facilitator. His motto: Attitude Determines your Altitude! He lead the group in several different team / leadership drills with discussion after each activity. We played with marbles, dodged balls with blind folds, went skiing and learned new tricks with string. The afternoon was filled with excitement, team building, FUN and best of all a few new T-shirts! Most important of all was the start of our “NETWORKING” with the others schools. We will continue to explore new opportunities, challenges and the ability to learn more about each other as the year progresses.

The next session is Education and History and Culture on November 9, 2007.

Our first Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program will begin on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Please report to Vogel Arena/Fieldhouse by 8:00 a.m. and we will be spending the entire day there. There is no transportation for this session. It is very important that you be on time. Please bring tennis shoes with you. We hope that you have a great day, a lot of fun and learn things about yourself that you can take home with you.

Following is some information that can help you prepare for the upcoming year:
What to wear:
Casual school attire is appropriate.
In the event special attire is needed, this will be noted in your monthly reminder postcards.

What will be provided:
· A light breakfast, lunch, snacks, water, and pop will be provided at ALL the sessions.
· A backpack to keep all Network New Ulm Youth paperwork – Please bring to each session.

In case of emergency:
· Please call our cell phone number 507-276-0210 (Lynn) or 276-233-6634 (Traci) for all the sessions.

Needed from you:
· Notify your schools prior to each session of your absence – work needs to be completed in advance.
· As part of your commitment to the program we need you be PRESENT for ALL the sessions. (Refer to the following pages for more details).
· We plan to return by 3:00; but we have run over in the past. Please inform your coaches or employers.

MVL & ALC students – Vogel Fieldhouse door – 7:55 am
NUHS students – Door A – 8:00 am

Our final session for Network New Ulm Youth was April 12, 2007, at the New Ulm Country Club. The day began with an icebreaker using baby photos of each student. Everyone enjoyed trying to guess who was who. A group picture was taken for the Journal.Next, Pastor Todd Nelson led the group through a team building activity. Each team had to determine what they would need to survive in a given situation. This was followed by a brief discussion on team dynamics.Mike Max returned as our guest speaker and delivered an inspirational message about making the most of the gifts you’ve been given. He’s an energetic speaker who provided a good message to the youth at an important time of their life.At 10:30, the adult Network New Ulm group joined us and paired off with students for a mixer and introductions. We then divided into eight groups for a “Cover Story” activity led by Katie Rasmussen. Participants were led through a visionary exercise by Katie. They were to imagine what we might read about New Ulm in a magazine cover story 10 years from now. Each person shared their vision with their small group. Then each group developed a “Cover Story” complete with illustrations, headlines, quotes, and sidebars. Each group reported to the large group and shared highlights. It was a great activity that showed the potential for a great future in New Ulm. The adults were challenged to begin working on these dreams and the youth were encouraged to think about returning to New Ulm at some point in their future.Youth and adults remixed into new groups for informal lunch conversations and enjoyed a great taco bar at the Country Club. Following lunch, the adults said farewell and the youth began their graduation ceremony.Individual and small group presentations were varied and lots of fun, as they found creative ways to share their Network New Ulm Youth experience with each other. They included new words to a song from the Sound of Music, a collage, Are you smarter than the Network New Ulm Graduate, poems, photos, and word puzzles. Students enjoyed their sweatshirts, pins, and treats. Parents began arriving in the large room at the Country Club and were able to join in for the PowerPoint and presentation of graduation certificates. The PowerPoint was again a highlight for the day.
