Session 3 Economic Health & Community Service
The Network New Ulm Youth group met for it's third session on January 7, 2009. What a great way to start out a new year! The holidays are over and it is time to get back into the swing of things. The group last met on November 29, 2008. It was a long break between sessions but the kids picked up where they left off and enjoyed networking with their new friends from other schools.
Economic health was the topic for the morning session with activities coordinated by Brian Tohal, the New Ulm Economic Development Coordinator. The group started with a presentation and tour of the New Ulm Kraft facility. Students learned that the Kraft brand is more than just cheese! In New Ulm, Kraft produces a lot of cheese however it also produces South Beach snack bars and Handie Snacks which include crackers and cheese and cookies and frosting.
The tour of the plant required the standard hair nets, ear plugs and overcoats! It's always fun to see the students with their Kraft visitor attire. Students were impressed with all of the machines and how they we able to do so many things to package and box the good produced without manual labor. Although the students really enjoyed the tour and presentation they liked the snacks provided at the end of the presentation the most! Thanks to Kraft for allowing NNUY to view their production process.
Next on the agenda was American Artstone. Students toured the production area and had a presentation showing concrete projects from near and far that American Artstone has produced. American Artstone, founded in 1914 is still producing innovative architectural precast and cat stone products. One of the latest project is for the new Minnesota Gopher Football Stadium to be complete in 2009.
With some trivia from Brian Tohal the students got a full picture of the employment opportunities waiting for them as they graduate form high school and college. New Ulm has a lot to offer in many different occupations. This marked the end of the Economic Heath portion of our day.
The Community Services portion of the day was coordinated by Kim Schimtz and to start the afternoon session the students were off to Ridgeway on German. Here the students visited with residents regarding assisted living life and learned about activities that fill the lives of some of the residents such as painting, writing a book, cross stitch and sewing. Students then had the opportunity to have lunch with the residents. They were able to visit and connect with the seniors and enjoy some good food!
On the move again to the Brown County Detox/Juvenile Detention Center. Students were intrigued by the facility and the services that are administered at this facility. Rarely seen by the general public the facility houses juveniles with serious legal issues and helps them prepare for the future in rebuilding their life. The detox side of the facility houses individuals that have over indulged and need to be detoxified before being released back into the public. Time was short but the students got a got enought information to know that they really don't want to experience these services from the inside!
On the move again the group visited Enterprise North and MRCI. Students were greeted by George Marti of MRCI and toured the production area where workers with special needs are able to work with assistance. MRCI provides a service to local companies to do portions of work that is more economical to have done manually. These special jobs are done by the MRCI work force for a wage in a supervised environment. This is a win win for the business who needs the manual labor performed and MRCI who can provide the service with an economic benifit to the business and the employee with special needs.
Students were not able to tour Enterprise North due to a large volume of illnesses but an overview of the company was given by Kim Schmitz. Students learned that Enterprise North also provide work for special needs workers with a higher level of supervision. Everyone has the potential to work and MRCI and Enterprise North provide an environment that allow individuals to prosper in the work force.
The last stop of the day was at the Family Services Building. Here students were greeted by Dick Embacher and Lisa Langer. They spoke to the students about all of the public services available to Brown County residents. Students were overwhelmed by the services to help individual in times of need.
Wow, that was one busy day. Hope you enjoyed the recap!

WARNING DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Mrs. Hamen, NU Cathedral Chemistry teacher showed students an experiment with a boat, a chemical and an aquarium partially filled with water. The reaction from the chemical and the water made the boat start of fire and burn!! Mrs. Hamen caution student to always wear their safety goggle when doing their chemistry experiments.
On October 29, 2008 the Network New Ulm Youth group met for their second session. In the morning the students explored education opportunities throughout New Ulm. Tours started at MVL where the students were treated to a continental breakfast, did a carpet ice breaker and enjoyed a tour of the school. Then they were off to the Alternative Learning Center. Here students heard about alternative learning opportunities which are different from traditional high schools. The third stop took them to New Ulm Public High School. Here students explored many different classes offered, which included photography and air brush, agribusiness and woodworking where students received an engraved pencil with their name on it that was created by the school's new laser engraving machine. A very high tech piece of equiment. The last stop took the group to Cathedral High School. Student here, got to experience activities in a number of different classes such as chemistry and art. One of the highlights each years on this tour the tunnel system that connects all three NUACS schools. Kids are facinated always fancinated by this.
After all the morning tours students were treated to lunch at the Martin Luther College Cafeteria. The food was great and the students had fun trying all the different selections. We all agreed that we are lucky we don't eat that way every lunch. It would be hard to control our food intake if you know what I mean!
Well with our bellies full we were off for a day of history. We started with a tour of the New Ulm Cemetery led by Jim Beck. Student learned about early settlers, the Indian uprising, different methods of burial and symbols found on old tombstones. The weather was beautiful which made the tour very pleasurable.
Next the students visited the Herman Monument. This year students were able to do a hands on tour and climb the monument. All the students went to the very top to overlook the City. Even Zach Fischer who was a little shaky but he conquered his fear a made it, knees shaking.
What better way to relax after an afternoon in the outdoors than to visit a bed and breakfast. Thank you to the Beyer Haus Bed & Breakfast for allowing the students to tour their home located at 224 S. Broadway. What a charming step back in time. This beautiful home welcomes tourest into their home year round with the finest amenities. The students were very intreagued by the concept of a B&B. It's not your typical hotel stay.
Well that is all we could fit into one day. By the end the students were exhausted and so were we and they were ready to go off to their after school activities. It was another successful day in terms of learning and networking with our community.
The next session is scheduled for January 7, 2009 were students will explore Economic Health and Social Services.

Session Personality Profiles / Team Building
2008-09 Network New Ulm Youth Personality Profiles/Team Building RecapAs another 2008-2009 school year begins, so does the next year of the Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program. This is a juniors-only program, and it looks like it will be a great group of kids, assuring an eventful year!
The first session was on Wednesday, September 17. Lisa Fischer employed by City of New Ulm Public Utilities and Lynn Gudgeon employed by Century 21 Koeckeritz Realty served as Day Chairs. Other alumni in attendance during the day were Steering Committee Members Lisa Roeder of Skillings Technology, Duane Winter of Taco Johns, Shawn Jakes of Comcast, Kathy VanRoekel of New Ulm Telecom, Shannon Hillsheim of United Prairie Bank, Scott Jackel and Marv Schlueter the newest member to the committee.
The morning session consisted of Personality Profiles and adjective name-game icebreaker. We will never forget “Newbalicious” Nick or Benevolent Ben. Katie Rasmussen of the University of MN Extension Service of Brown County facilitated the personality profiles and gave us insight into the makeup of the group. There were a lot of oranges and blues type personalities, who always have a good time by nature, but the greens felt lonely, as there were only three. Luckily, the gold’s kept us on task.
Rick Rassier of JUMP was our team building facilitator. His motto: Attitude Determines your Altitude! He led the group in several different team/leadership drills with discussion after each activity. We played with marbles, dodged balls while blindfolded, went land skiing and learned new tricks with string. The afternoon was filled with excitement, team building, FUN and best of all a few new T-shirts! Most important of all was the start of our “NETWORKING” with the others schools. We will continue to explore new opportunities, challenges and the ability to learn more about each other as the year progresses.
The next session is Education and History and Culture on Ocotber 29, 2008.

Education and History Day
The second session of Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program got underway on Wednesday, November 9. The day appropriately started with a school bus ride, making a couple pickups and delivering us to MVL. Groups were formed for an icebreaker (What does a crow say, anyway?), then a tour of MVL High School, tasty treats, and some info about the school from Pastor Fischer. Back on the bus; next stop Riverbend Alternative Learning Center. There we split into two groups so we could tour the facility. After our tours we were greeted by Synova Nelson, the principal, for a Q&A session. The ALC is about choice and an opportunity to learn in a different environment that is a better fit for some students. Students come from quite a few school districts in the area. A number of Network participants noted that this was a learning highlight for them for the day. From the ALC, the bus took us to New Ulm High School. We were greeted by Student Body President and Vice President, after a short introduction we set out to tour the building and several classrooms. We received demonstrations or explanations RE: Horticulture, Shop, Construction, and Photography (A dark room is really dark.). The visit concluded with a wrap-up meeting in the Media Center with Principal Mark Bergmann. He went over the courses and different options, including several ways to get college credit. Some of the NUHS students even saw parts of the school they didn’t know existed. Back on the bus-and after a short ride we arrive at Cathedral High School for our final stop of the morning. After introductory remarks from Mr. Olson, we broke into groups. We toured the building, including “the tunnel” and then had a classroom experience before a wrap-up with Principal Jason Olson. On to Martin Luther College, where lunch was provided cafeteria style ( so many choices and what should we eat) Duane Winter gave a recap of the colleges history in New Ulm and its educational benefits to its students.
There was a lot of learning and networking, different groupings of students at each school, and a chance to see each other’s schools. Special thanks to Rev. Wayne Fischer (MVL), Synova Nelson (ALC), Mark Bergmann (NUHS), and Jason Olson (CHS) for their help in planning and hosting the visits. The time was very full; a lot was covered in a short time. Never knowing what the weather will be like always makes the History and Culture portion of our day interesting.. From Martin Luther College, we next went to the Pioneer section of the cemetery. Even though it was very windy and COLD we huddled together and learned what the different symbols on stones meant. We also saw where important figures in the history of New Ulm are buried. A thank you to Jim Boeck for braving the weather to share his knowledge. Our next stop was Herman where Denny Warta shared his knowledge of Herman with our group. He has many interesting facts and stories which I’m sure not many people know. Did you know that if it weren’t for Herman we would not be speaking English or German? Our last stop of the day was to the Beyer Haus, which is Bed and Breakfast. A highlight of the day for many was the Silverston Suite, the group had a hard time deciding which room they would like to stay in.
Our day chairs for Education were Lisa Roeder, Duane Winter, and Jerry Kauffman.Day chair for History was Naomi Stewart.

Personality Profiles / Team Building Recap: Session I
As another school year begins so does the 2007 - 2008 Sessions of Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program. The first session was on Wednesday, September 19. This is the second year of our juniors-only program, and it looks like it will be a great group of kids, assuring an eventful year!Traci Green of Brown County Probation and Lynn Gudgeon of Koeckeritz Realty served as Day Chairs. They began the morning with an overview of the program.
The morning session consisted of Personality Profiles and adjective name-game icebreaker. We will never forget Mountain top Mitch. The personality profiles gave us more insight into the makeup of the group. There were a lot of Oranges and Blues, who always have a good time by nature, but the Greens felt lonely as there were only two; so they choose to dazzled us with their vocabulary skills. Luckily, the Golds kept us on task!! Katie Rasmussen of the University of MN Extension Service Brown County facilitated the profiles session.
Other Alumni in attendance that morning were Steering Committee Members Lisa Roeder of Skillings Technology, Duane Winter of Taco Johns, Shawn Jakes of ComCast, Julaine Balbach of Farasyn Construction, Kathy Van Roekel of New Ulm Telecom, and Shannon Hillesheim of United Prairie was our New Ulm Chamber Representative.

Most important of all was the start of our “NETWORKING” with the others schools. We will continue to explore new opportunities, challenges and the ability to learn more about each other as the year progresses.
The next session is Education and History and Culture on November 9, 2007.

Session 1
The 2007-2008 Network New Ulm Youth begins September 19,2007 with the personality profile and an afternoon of team building.
Graduation Day
Group photo of the 2006-2007 Graduation Class of Network New Ulm Youth
Our final session for Network New Ulm Youth was April 12, 2007, at the New Ulm Country Club. The day began with an icebreaker using baby photos of each student. Everyone enjoyed trying to guess who was who. A group picture was taken for the Journal.Next, Pastor Todd Nelson led the group through a team building activity. Each team had to determine what they would need to survive in a given situation. This was followed by a brief discussion on team dynamics.Mike Max returned as our guest speaker and delivered an inspirational message about making the most of the gifts you’ve been given. He’s an energetic speaker who provided a good message to the youth at an important time of their life.At 10:30, the adult Network New Ulm group joined us and paired off with students for a mixer and introductions. We then divided into eight groups for a “Cover Story” activity led by Katie Rasmussen. Participants were led through a visionary exercise by Katie. They were to imagine what we might read about New Ulm in a magazine cover story 10 years from now. Each person shared their vision with their small group. Then each group developed a “Cover Story” complete with illustrations, headlines, quotes, and sidebars. Each group reported to the large group and shared highlights. It was a great activity that showed the potential for a great future in New Ulm. The adults were challenged to begin working on these dreams and the youth were encouraged to think about returning to New Ulm at some point in their future.Youth and adults remixed into new groups for informal lunch conversations and enjoyed a great taco bar at the Country Club. Following lunch, the adults said farewell and the youth began their graduation ceremony.Individual and small group presentations were varied and lots of fun, as they found creative ways to share their Network New Ulm Youth experience with each other. They included new words to a song from the Sound of Music, a collage, Are you smarter than the Network New Ulm Graduate, poems, photos, and word puzzles. Students enjoyed their sweatshirts, pins, and treats. Parents began arriving in the large room at the Country Club and were able to join in for the PowerPoint and presentation of graduation certificates. The PowerPoint was again a highlight for the day.
Thank you to all who helped in this final session and who keep this wonderful program progressing.

Justice System and County Government
Wednesday, February 14th was the Justice System and County and City Government Day for the Network New Ulm Youth group.
Then the group made their way to the Brown County Courthouse. Judge John Rodenberg gave a great demonstration as he explained the roles of the people who are authorized to go beyond the bar before beginning his trial. Assistant County Attorney, John Yost gave an overview of the County Attorney’s role related to the justice system. Traci Green described the probation process and showed them the monitoring equipment they use for the 700 some people on probation at any one time in Brown County.
County Administrator Charles Enter gave an overview of the Brown County Commissioners. He used a multiple choice quiz format to share pertinent statistics for the County and always has a great way of transitioning the group throughout the day as Day Chair.
Sergeant Kalow addressed the group with respect to the New Ulm Police Department. Chief Deputy Sheriff Jason Seidlled the tour of the Law Enforcement Center, where the students especially enjoyed seeing the 911-dispatch area and a close-up view of a squad car. Jail Captain Paul Weiland led the tours of the jail, where it is always fascinating to see the tight security measures and the limitations put upon the inmates. Part of the jail experience in the past, as you know, was eating jail food for lunch. (Un)fortunately, the jail food service was unable to accommodate the size of our group, so the students had to settle for Taco Johns!
We would like to thank Chuck Enter for all of his efforts in making this a valuable learning experience for the youth.

City Government
On Wednesday, February 14th the Youth Network New Ulm group explored what City Government had to offer.
The students participated in a mock council meeting. City Council President Dan Beranek, City Manager Brian Gramentz, Mayor Joel Albrecht, Finance Director Reg Vorwerk, and Asst. City Attorney Hugh Nierengarten facilitated the activity. The topics of discussion were a city wide smoking ban in all public places, including bars and restaurants, and the approval of a Peace Rally held on City property and the placement of Purple Peace Ribbons on light standards on Broadway and the Highway 14 water tower.
In the activity each student had a specific role to support or not support the topics. The students were very creative in their roles.
After long debates the councilors passed the smoking ban ordinance and denied the Peace Rally.
The students then had a short presentation given by Officer Jeremy Reed and his canine partner Thunder. The Youth asked question regarding the training they both attended in the last three years and how Thunder is used in local law enforcement. The student really liked this part of the day.
Then it was off to the Fire Station, where students were greeted by Curt Curry the New Ulm Fire Department Chief. After a brief introduction on how the Fire Department works, students were able to try on a full set of firefighter’s gear, view the thermo-imaging camera the firefighters use for search and rescue and learn about different trucks and equipment used by the fire fighters. Because of the cold temperatures (a balmy 10 degrees above zero) the Fire Department didn’t set up the Hook & Ladder Truck outside as in years past however, students did have a chance to catch some air with a bucket truck ride provided by the Electric Distribution Department. This year everyone too a ride, even Lynn and Tracy! No scaredy cats in this group!
A big THANK YOU to all who participated in leading the activities. It really is a group effort.

Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program
Economic Health Day
January 10th, 2006
Students arrived at Food Shelf with the their donations, due to unfortunate miscommincation they where not open, as they were expecting us at 8:15 pm not 8:15 am.So… on to Kraft Foods where we where greeted by our Day Chairs, Brian Tohal (New Ulm Economic Development Corporation), Jackie Farasyn (American Artstone) and Keith Pryor (Kraft Foods.)
A short presentation was given on some fascinating Kraft facts and figures. Mr. Pryor then gave a “Kraft – Not Kraft” slide show. He flashed slides of various products and the students guessed if they were made by Kraft.
Next was the distribution of the hairnets, earplugs, and gowns (a Kodak moment!). The students were split up into groups and led into the plant by Kraft employees. No one seemed to like the smell, but the students were fascinated by all of the machinery and the automation. Kraft distributed cheese and crackers to all and we boarded the bus to Artstone. Thanks Mr. Pryor and Kraft Foods!
On the bus to our next stop, Brian Tohal spoke about the economics in New Ulm and played the “Top Employers” game. The students had to guess who they thought were the top twelve employers in New Ulm during the quick trip across town.
At Artstone , Nancy Fogelberg gave a slide show presentation on projects that Arstone has done across the country. After the presentation we where divided into four groups and given guided tours of the facility. The students got to see how concrete was framed, molded, colored and shipped. At the conclusion of the tour each of the students receive a small momento from Artstone; a pen, calendar, and a note pad. Thanks Artstone!
The Economic Health portion of the day concluded and the bus headed for the afternoon’s destinations.
Network New Ulm Youth Community Services Day
January 11th, 2006
Community Service Day for Network New Ulm Youth was held on Wednesday January 10th, following the Economic Health session, which was held in the morning. The day chair for Community Service Day was Kim Hemphil- Schmitz (MRCI.)
The first stop of the day was at the New Ulm Senior Center. Students listened to a presentation given by Dian Fasse, CAST Community And Seniors Together) director at the Senior Center. Dian explained about the CAST program and other things our community does to assist and promote healthy and social living for our community’s senior citizens. The student’s dined with the seniors and once again found this to be a very rewarding experience.
After lunch we boarded the bus and rode to our next destination, Brown County Evaluation Center. At these locations, the students split into two groups and then toured each of the two sides of the building, the detox and the detention center. This is an effective learning experience as the youth see the destination that poor decision-making can lead to.
Next it was on to MRCI. Once again we split into two groups and toured the two sides of MRCI. The students where treated here with one of their favorites- a CHOCOLATE candy bar- Yum! Thanks MRCI.
Next item on the agenda was the Brown County Services buildings in New Ulm. On the way Traci Green (Brown County Probation,) pointed out the many places in our community that can offer help to our community’s citizens. Students who provided correct answers to Traci’s questions were rewarded with candy bars. A group favorite! At the Family Service we were meet by Jill Kramer in additional to a great presetaion she captured the students hearts with cookies! Jill talked about mental health issues and how they relate to family situtations. The seond half of her presentaion dealt with the differences between chemically abusive and chemically dependant. Thanks Ms. Kramer for the great presentaion and of course the cookies!
The session was well-received by the youth as the program continues to show the many wonderful aspects of living in New Ulm.

Session 2- Education & History - Nov. 1, 2006
The second session of Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program got underway on Wednesday, November 1. The day appropriately started with a school bus ride with driver Dean Hosna making a couple pickup stops and delivering us to MVL. After our tours we were greeted by Synova Nelson, the principal, for a Q&A session with several student representatives. The ALC is about choice and an opportunity to learn in a different environment that is a better fit for some students. Students come from quite a few school districts in the area. A number of Network participants noted that this was a learning highlight for them for the day. From the ALC, the bus took us to New Ulm High School. We were greeted by Student Body President and Vice President Joe Babel and Tyler Stuckey after a short introduction we set out to tour the building and several classrooms. We received demonstrations or explanations RE: Horticulture, Shop, Construction, Computer Lab, and Photography (A dark room is really dark.). The visit concluded with a wrap-up meeting in the Media Center with Principal Mark Bergmann. Lots of offerings and options, including several ways to get college credit, some of the NUHS students even saw parts of the school they didn’t know existed. Back on the bus-and after a short ride we arrive at Cathedral High School for our final stop of the morning. After introductory remarks from Molly Boyle and Sally Schreiber, we broke into groups. We toured the building, including “the tunnel” and then had a classroom experience before a wrap-up with Principal Jason Olson. On to Turner Halle, where lunch was provided by the Turner Ladies in preparation for the afternoon session on Community History. There was a lot of learning and networking, different groupings of students at each school, and a chance to see each other’s schools. Special thanks to Rev. Wayne Fischer (MVL), Synova Nelson (ALC), Margaret Weiss and Mark Bergmann (NUHS), and Jason Olson (CHS) for their help in planning and hosting the visits. The time was very full; a lot was covered in a short time.
Never knowing what the weather will be like always makes the History and Culture portion of our day interesting. We started out with an excellent lunch at Turner Hall where Rich Runck filled us in on the history of the Turners, the building and a little bit about the history of New Ulm. He always has interesting stories for us. He also showed us an antique “CD player” that was owned by his grandfather.
From Turner we next went to the Pioneer section of the cemetery.
At this stop it was a little warmer since we were able to step inside the room at the bottom. Did you know that if it weren’t for Herman we would not be speaking English or German?
Our last stop of the day was to the Rheim house, which is now the Bohemian Bed and Breakfast. A highlight of the day for many! Bobbie and Mark showed us the awesome rooms including the room featured on HG TV. The group had a hard time deciding which room they would like to stay
Our day chairs for Education were Lisa Roeder, Duane Winter, and Jerry Kauffman.
Day chair for History was Naomi Stewart.

Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program Session 1
2006-07 Network New Ulm Youth Personality Profiles/Ropes Course Recap
As the fall weather approaches, it signals a beginning to the new year of the Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program. The first session was on Wednesday, September 20. This is the first year of our juniors-only program, and it looks like it will be a great group of kids, assuring an eventful year!
Julaine Balbach of Farasyn Construction and Kathy Van Roekel of NU-Telecom, who could not stay away from the program and the kids, served as Day Chairs. Lynn Gudgeon of Koeckeritz Realty began with an overview of the program, including its beginnings, funding, benefits, and expectations. The adjective name-game icebreaker, followed by the Colors Personality Profiles gave us more insight into the makeup of the group. There were a lot of Oranges and Blues, who always have a good time by nature, but the Greens had a great sense of humor, too, so it was fun!! Luckily, the Golds kept us on task!! Katie Rasmussen of the University of MN Extension Service Brown County facilitated the profiles session. Other Alumni in attendance that morning were Steering Committee Members Lisa Roeder of Skillings Technology, Duane Winter of Taco Johns, and Shawn Jakes of ComCast.
Dean Hosna from New Ulm Bus Lines was kind enough to drive us to MSU, Mankato for the Adventure Challenge Course on a perfect, sunny fall day. This is an awesome facility, recently re-done to include new, much higher activities than in the past that challenged the kids to exceed their expectations outside of their circle of comfort as they gained confidence. It is a powerful experience to observe fears being diminished by aspirations to accomplish the goals they have set with encouragement from their peers. Most importantly, it brought connection to the group of students from the four schools, so they can expand on that networking throughout the up-coming sessions and into their senior year in New Ulm.
The next session is Education and History and Culture on November 1, 2006.

Graduation
Our final session for Network New Ulm Youth was April 13, 2006, at the New Ulm Country Club. The day began with an icebreaker using baby photos of each student. Everyone enjoyed trying to guess who was who. A group picture was taken for the Journal.
Next, Carisa Buegler led the group through a team building activity. Each team had various lengths of plastic tubing and a marble. Each team needed to make the marble travel 20 feet in the shortest time possible. This was followed by a brief discussion on team dynamics.
Mike Max returned as our guest speaker and delivered an inspirational message about making the most of the gifts you’ve been given. He’s an energetic speaker who provided a good message to the youth at an important time of their life.
At 10:30, the adult Network New Ulm group joined us and paired off with students for a mixer and introductions. The adults were challenged to begin working on these dreams and the youth were encouraged to think about returning to New Ulm at some point in their future.
Youth and adults remixed into new groups for informal lunch conversations and enjoyed a great taco bar at the Country Club. Following lunch, the adults said farewell and the youth began their graduation ceremony.
Individual and small group presentations were varied and lots of fun, as they found creative ways to share their Network New Ulm Youth experience with each other. They included “top ten,” puzzles, a collage, Pictionary, charades, trumpet solo, video, photos, a look ahead and a rap song. Students enjoyed their sweatshirts, pins, and treats.
Parents began arriving in the large room at the Country Club and were able to join in for the PowerPoint and presentation of graduation certificates. The PowerPoint was again a highlight for the day. The day concluded with a thank you to Julaine Balbach and Kathy Van Roekel for all their hard work in making Network New Ulm Youth Leadership Program a success for the past five years.
Thank you to all who helped in this final session and who keep this wonderful program progressing.

Healthcare
On Wed, March 8th, the Network NU Youth gathered at the NU Medical Center. Our first scheduled event was the arrival of an Air Ambulance Helicopter. Take note - don't plan for this emergency mode of transportation on a foggy day!! Unfortunately, the youth had to miss out on the helicopter! The students were greeted by Dr. Joan Krikava, Medical Director of the hospital. She informed them of all the services provided at the Medical Center and gave them some insight on how one career path leads to another, describing her own journey from Dietician to Internist to Emergency Room Doctor. Mary Bauer, PTA led the M&M ice-breaker. The students found out that there is such a thing as TOO MANY M&M's. They had to say one thing about themselves for every M&M they had!
Then, we were off to some on-site hospital visits which included Radiology, Behavioral Health, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Renal Dialysis, Chemotherapy, Lab, Labor & Delivery, Nursing, and the Emergency Room. Participants got first hand experience trying out the air mattresses, saw much of the new Radiology and Lab technology, and saw some beautiful newborn babies. The students also heard from healthcare professionals in specialty areas what it is like to work in a hospital environment. The students were impressed by the variety of services offered, the technology and the caring and dedicated staff.
Then, we boarded the bus and cars and ventured off into the community to discover some of our community healthcare establishments. Occupational Health at 3M was of great interest - seeing how industry must comply with OSHA standards and how companies provide directly for the health and safety of their employees. Anita Hoffman, RN from Brown County Public Health presented information about an Avian Bird Flu epidemic. Anita sought feedback from the group as to how to disseminate information about Pandemics, and what we might do in case New Ulm was to be affected. Another group visited Prairie Senior Center and was surprised to find a facility in our community specifically dedicated to the care of adults with memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. Ridgeway on 23rd was a stop illustrating some of the housing choices available in our community for elders, where health /wellness /safety needs are a priority.
We then returned to the NU Medical Center for lunch (rave reviews for Hy-Vee's catering service), and a talk by Renee LeMyre from the Substance Abuse Counseling Center. Renee spoke from the heart about recognizing addictions and taking action to address it in ourselves or our friends. The students gave a quick wrap-up of their off-site experiences in a question and answer session. Thanks to the team of Dr. Charles Stephens, Mary Bauer, Marcy MacAulay, and Eileen Campbell for organizing the day's events.
Media
Media afternoon was a whirlwind of activity, exercise and information. First, Shawn
Jakes talked to the students about the video and Internet services that Time-Warner provides. By splitting into four small groups, students then experienced New Ulm media by rotating to four locations in two hours.
At the Journal, students were greeted by Nikki Holmgren and Cindy Hoffman who talked to the group about the advertising process that is used to make copy for the Journal. The students were amazed at the area covered by the Journal’s readership. Thanks to Lynn Gudgeon for coordinating that portion of the day.
Brian Filzen, Tom Wheeler and Todd Olson then met with students and provided humor, encouragement and discussion topics as the students went “live” on KNUJ. Hard to imagine that the same students who were quite active on the bus trip became a little more subdued at the sight of the “on the air” sign!
Brian took a group of students into the recording studio to create a pre-recorded message that will be played over the next few weeks regarding applications for the upcoming year. For some students, being “cool” on the radio was an exciting experience, while others were quite relieved to be heard and not seen.
NU-Telecom provided the students with two opportunities: to hear about NU-Telecom’s products and services and to create a videotaped commercial to encourage other students to apply for next year’s Network New Ulm Youth Program.
Students learned from Eric Ruff and Becki Herzog about the Web Room at NU-Telecom, which offers 4-6 computers for public use during regular business hours. Also, high-speed Internet, networking Services, digital video services and of course, the all-too-familiar array of cellular products and services were discussed.
Next, the groups spent a little time in front of the camera. Chuck Lehrke taped each group creating a portion of the commercial that, when finished, told the story of the Network New Ulm Youth Program—its purpose, how it is funded, what is involved, what the students most enjoyed, and then gave detail on how students could apply to participate in the 2006-2007 program. Once again, it was evident that there are some students who want to be “in the public’s eye” and those who are the voice and backbone of a group without being out front. Patty Matthews learned that her Pittsburgh speech pattern didn’t sound at all like a “New Ulmite.” But the script was well done and a great message was sent to all viewers.
When the walking was done and the stage fright had faded, everyone enjoyed some belly laughs as they watched “their” commercial. The advertisement for the program will be replayed many times over the next few weeks leading up to the May 5th deadline. An ice-cream treat was refreshing after the hustling they had to do to get through all the presentations in one short afternoon.
We, as day chairs—Patty Matthews and Todd Wendorf would like to say thank you to everyone who made the day enjoyable. We do believe the students left this session knowing a bit more about the media and communication offerings that are right in their own backyards!

Justice System and County Government
Wednesday, February 15th was the Justice System and County and City Government Day for the Network New Ulm Youth group. The morning began with a fun icebreaker and breakfast by Dennis Schmidt, a Network NU alumnus.
Then the group made their way to the Brown County Courthouse. Unfortunately, there was a real trial scheduled that morning, so Judge John Rodenberg briefly explained the roles of the people who are authorized to go beyond the bar before beginning his trial. Assistant County Attorney, John Yost gave an overview of the County Attorney’s role related to the justice system. Les Schultz described the probation process and showed them the monitoring equipment they use for the 700 some people on probation at any one time in Brown County.
County Administrator Charles Enter gave an overview of the Brown County Commissioners. He used a multiple choice quiz format to share pertinent statistics for the County and always has a great way of transitioning the group throughout the day as Day Chair.
Senior Investigator Jeff Hohensee addressed the group with respect to the New Ulm Police Department. Chief Deputy Sheriff Robert Christensen led the tour of the Law Enforcement Center, where the students especially enjoyed seeing the 911-dispatch area and a close-up view of a squad car. Jail Captain Paul Weiland led the tours of the jail, where it is always fascinating to see the tight security measures and the limitations put upon the inmates. Part of the jail experience in the past, as you know, was eating jail food for lunch. (Un)fortunately, the jail food service was unable to accommodate the size of our group, so the students had to settle for Happy Joes!
We would like to thank Chuck Enter for all of his efforts in making this a valuable learning experience for the youth.

City Government
On Wednesday, February 16th the Youth Network New Ulm group explored what City Government had to offer. Day chairs were Lisa Fischer and Steve Soukup.
The students participated in a mock council meeting. City Council President Dan Beranek, City Manager Brian Gramentz, Mayor Joel Albrecht, Finance Director Reg Vorwerk, and Asst. City Attorney Susan Nierengarten facilitated the activity. The topics of discussion were a city wide smoking ban in all public places, including bars and restaurants, and the approval of a conditional use permit for a tattoo and body piercing shop in a residential area.
In the activity each student has a specific role to support or not support the topics. The students were very creative in their roles. After long debates the councilors passed the smoking ban ordinance and approved the conditional use permit for the tattoo and body piercing shop.
The students then had a short presentation given by Officer Jeremy Reed. Officer Reed spoke on the roll of his canine partner Thunder and the training they both attended in the last three years.
Then it was off to the Fire Station. Students were greeted and addressed by Curt Curry the New Ulm Fire Chief. After a brief introduction, students were able to try on a full set of firefighter’s gear, view the thermo-imaging camera the firefighters use for search and rescue, and learn about the Hook and Ladder truck. Some students wanted to climb the ladder!! (brave souls) Students did have a chance to catch some air with a bucket truck ride provided by the Electric Distribution Department.
A big THANK YOU to all who participated in leading the activities. It really is a group effort.
